When trading online, a DEMAT account stores shares and securities in dematerialized/electronic form. Dematerialization is the process by which your share certificates are transformed from physical to electronic format to improve their accessibility. To settle trades electronically, you must have a Demat Account number.  

The first step is to choose a depository participant (DP), fill in the application form online and complete the KYC and In-Person verification processes. Once this is done you are to sign an agreement with your DP. When your application is processed and approved you will receive your unique Beneficial Owner Identification Number (BO ID) to access your DMAT account.
